Overview:

I worked as the UX designer and researcher on HazAdapt’s LoCo (Local Safety Information) feature, which surfaces local hazard information in a clear, approachable, and interactive way. The goal was to make safety information human-friendly and actionable, helping users engage without feeling overwhelmed.

The Challenge:

  • Determine what hazards are relevant for users based on where they live

  • Find a way to top-load safety information, relevant to where the user lives

  • Finding a solution that works smoothly across native mobile, web and mobile web, keeping interactions simple and clear.

My Approach:

Interactive Local Content: Buttons, icons, and hazard listings make local hazards easy to spot and navigate.

Human-Centered Design: Use of the same imagery throughout components created for loco, and use of iconography from the source of local resources both build and play on familiarity by creating an association between local local hazards and their resources.

Iterative Testing & Feedback: Taste tests, demos, and research informed layout, iconography, colors, and flow.

Dev Collaboration: Ensured smooth handoffs, clear documentation, and consistent experiences across platforms.

Highlights

Mobile & Web Usability: Adjusted layouts, buttons, and interactions for consistency across platforms.

Home Page Integration: LoCo is front and center, making local hazard info easy to find.

Interactive Visual Cues: Green icons and components guide users visually.

Iterative Improvement: Feedback-informed updates refined usability, accessibility, and clarity over multiple sprints.

Outcome:

Users can easily find and engage with local hazard content.

Human-friendly design improves clarity, comprehension, and usability.

Iterative testing and research ensured a consistent, approachable experience across devices.

Reflection:

LoCo reinforces the value of human-first design for emergency tools. By focusing on clarity, approachable interactions, and iterative feedback, we created a feature that genuinely helps users understand and engage with local safety information.
